About Longwood University

Longwood University is a four-year public, liberal-arts university located in Farmville, which is a town, situated in both Cumberland and Prince Edward counties, in the US state of Virginia, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 7000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. Farmville serves as the county seat of Prince Edward County, and it is best known for the fact that it is home of Longwood University.

Longwood University was founded in 1839, as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, and it became a university in July, 2002. It is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning and one of the oldest public institutions of higher education for women in USA. Today, the university offers its students over 100 majors and minors, in various fields of study, through 3 colleges, which are: the College of Business and Economics, the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Education and Human Services.

Longwood has ben highly ranked for most of its educational programs, over the years, by various significant publications, being currently ranked in the top ten public, masters-level universities in the South by U.S. News and World Report, also being named one of only 20 schools in the country that actively promote and foster student success, by USA Today.

Athletics

Its athletic teams are known as the Longwood University Lancers, who compete in NCAA Division I, in various sports, for both men and women, including in baseball, golf, basketball, cross country, soccer, tennis and softball. The Lancers have experienced success in many of the sports in which they compete, among their most notable achievements being the conference title in 2008, in men's soccer, when they defeated Adelphi, the women's soccer team also having contributed to the university's athletic fame, capturing a United Soccer Conference championship in 2008, when they defeated Utah Valley State.
